ChoraChori is empowering these trafficking-prone girls from a remote Nepalese Himalayan community through supporting them with higher education and in craft training. Most recently Dutch volunteer Aagje Hoekstra has been teaching them how to make shopping bags from recycled rice and lentil sacks for sale in Holland and beyond. The girls are very grateful!

Students at Nexus International School in Singapore helped us with designs for our online Christmas cards but they didn't stop there. They printed these up and sold them as actual cards at their recent school fair - over 500 sold in less than an hour! Great exposure and fundraising for ChoraChori. The challenge of ChoraChori's child rescue operations: Shailaja Cm has just returned from her latest trip to India with a deaf woman and her three year old son. Safely back in Kathmandu, she has been able to call upon the support of former deaf beneficiaries (now in employment) to help with interpreting and working out how best we can assist this woman and her child. Meantime they are staying at the ChoraChori refuge in Godawari, overjoyed to be back in Nepal and in such good hands.

Former Nepal volunteer Ben-James is still working hard for ChoraChori even back in the UK. He and Clare Hilder, Lara's mum, set up a stall yesterday in Kingsbridge to sell the felt products our girls have been making at the Kathmandu refuge workshop. The items sold like hot cakes - raising £170 which was topped up by supporter Trevor Lethbridge to £200. The £200 was in turn fed into the Big Give Christmas Challenge, miraculously becoming £400. The ChoraChori child rescue team has visited a boys' shelter in north India which is not a happy place, to say the least. Shailaja and Reeti have interviewed 11 boys to establish their circumstances and nationalities. Of these 8 can return to Nepal however, frustratingly, this will have to wait until later this week because the local Child Welfare Committee (that authorises and administers releases) is involved in some other business at the moment. And the team also has to return now because a forthcoming election in Nepal will cause difficulties in crossing the border and travel within Nepal. To be continued....

After reuniting two girls with their families in south Nepal, Shailaja and Reeti from ChoraChori-Nepal crossed into Bihar, north India yesterday. They are currently interviewing 13 Nepalese boys and 4 Nepalese girls who are being held at a children's home at Muzaffarpur. If they can confirm that they are indeed Nepalese nationals the team will bring them home on Monday - so a busy weekend lies ahead.

As part of our involvement in this year's Big Give Christmas Challenge we will be holding our "Big" dinner on Thursday, the 30th November at the historical Victory Services Club near Marble Arch in London. Actually it will be a very small and cosy dinner for a maximum of 24 of our supporters. These will include Philip Hunter and Rory Buckworth, two of our three intrepid cyclists who took part in their "Take the High Road" cycle challenge from Shangai to Kathmandu earlier this year. After dinner Philip and Rory will give a talk and present a short film about the highlights of their journey.

Through the 2017 Big Give Christmas Challenge we are aiming to raise £40,000 in one week, starting on #givingtuesday, the 28th November. During that week all online public donations will be matched at 100% through pledges we already have in place (so for example a £10 gift automatically doubles up to £20). These funds will go towards our Kathmandu refuge and rescue fund for 2018.

A generous supporter has covered the costs of this three course dinner plus wine so that instead of selling tickets we are inviting donations to the Challenge that become eligible for Gift Aid. As a guide, the cost of the dinner works out at approximately £65 per head.

Please drop me a line on [email protected] as soon as possible and by no later than Tuesday 14th November if you would like to join us, with or without a guest or guests. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Dress is lounge suit or equivalent and there will be a cash bar available for afterwards. Hope to see you there!
