Working through Indian partner NGOs and the local authorities, ChoraChori Nepal field staff are repatriating Nepal's lost children. This involves not just retrieving the children but also researching their families so that, if it is safe to do so, we can effect family reunifications. If not, we will place the children in a safe childcare environment where they can attend school. Older children may join vocational training. And if there are any traffickers to be found, the team will find them and bring them to justice. In September 2015 we rescued the first 13 Nepali children from Bangalore, followed by a further 26 children from Delhi in December 2015. The children have been accommodated at our Kathmandu and Hetauda temporary shelters pending reunification with families or ChoraChori Nepal being able to make alternative care arrangements.
Rescuing Nepali children from India
The ChoraChori Nepal team has a wealth of experience in conducting child rescue operations inside India. Indeed Shailaja, the Co-Director has an unrivalled track record in tracing lost children and bringing them home to a safe environment where they have a chance to recover and make good in life. These children may be runaways who've crossed the open border with India in the hope of finding a better life only to end up in children's homes where they are forgotten about. Or they may be trafficked to India, sold into a life of slavery and abuse by evil men and women who prey on vulnerable families in rural communities.
